JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's military says it has launched airstrikes early Tuesday in Gaza against dozens of Hamas targets. The strikes are said to be in response to a barrage of rockets fired into Israel since late Sunday. On Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Hamas would pay for the killing of three kidnapped Israeli teens. Their bodies were found Monday after an intense two week search by troops.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A total of about 750 U.S. troops will be in Baghdad as the Pentagon steps up security at the U.S. Embassy and is advising Iraqi forces doing battle with Sunni insurgents. President Barack Obama advised congressional leaders about the latest 200 that arrived Sunday and Monday, and an additional 300 were ordered Monday. Meanwhile, the State Department says it's moving a "small number" of staffers from the main embassy in Baghdad to two consulates in northern and southern Iraq.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry says time is running out for Iran to negotiate a comprehensive agreement on its nuclear program. Writing in an op-ed in the Washington Post, Kerry says Iran needs to take the steps to assure the world its nuclear program "will be exclusively peaceful." The deadline is July 20. Kerry says a deal is still possible.
PLANO, Texas (AP) — A man charged with trying to blow up a North Texas natural gas pipeline in 2012 has pleaded guilty to two of the charges he faced at federal trial. The Dallas Morning News reports Anson Chi pleaded guilty to possessing a destructive device and using an explosive device maliciously. He was arrested in 2012 near a small explosion by a natural-gas pipeline. The blast caused minimal damage but critically injured Chi. Letters show Chi for a time corresponded with Unabomber Ted Kaczynski (kah-ZIHN'-skee).
MIAMI (AP) — A tropical depression has formed off the coast of Florida and is expected to develop fairly quickly into the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. The latest readings show that Tropical Depression One has maximum sustained winds of about 35 mph. It's centered 105 miles east-southeast of Cape Canaveral and is moving southwest at about 2 mph. It's forecast to become a tropical storm by Tuesday.
