JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking volunteers to clip the fins of 50,000 hatchery-raised cutthroat trout to be released into Palisades Reservoir.
The small cuts identify the fish as hatchery-raised and don't harm the fish.
Game and Fish used to release 300,000 cutthroat into Palisades every spring. This year, only 100,000 fish will be released but they'll be released this fall and will be bigger in the hope that not as many of them will get washed through Palisades Dam.
The fish to be clipped are about 5 inches long. Fin-clipping volunteers are needed Tuesday and Wednesday at the Jackson National Fish Hatchery.
The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports (http://bit.ly/1qrr22u) the Idaho Fish and Game Department will host a fin-clipping for another 50,000 fish later this summer.
