SPANISH FORK — A man riding his bike died after being hit by a car early Monday morning.

A woman driving a car south on 1200 West near 8000 South with her two young children called dispatchers at 5:29 a.m. saying she hit someone riding a bicycle, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. She told them she found parts of the bicycle, but could not find the rider.

Police located Spanish Fork resident Wayne Warner Harwood, 68, in extremely critical condition off the side of the road in tall grass, according to Sgt. Spencer Cannon. Medical personnel performed CPR on him and LifeFlight was called to the accident, but the man was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

Harwood was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, investigators said. It is unknown what direction he was traveling in and the accident is still under investigation.

The sun was starting to come up but it was still dark at the time of the accident, police said. Sunrise was at 6 a.m.
