RENO, Nev. (AP) — The union representing Reno-area transit bus system employees says members voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike despite progress in contract talks. Teamsters Local 533 announced the move yesterday ahead of a deadline for expiration of the current two-year agreement. Union President Gary Watson says the vote doesn't start a strike but allows union leaders to call a work stoppage any time starting tomorrow.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Fireworks fundraising booths opened throughout the Las Vegas over the weekend, amid safety tips from firefighters urging caution to make Independence Day celebrations safe. While legal "safe-and-sane" fireworks went on sale Saturday, Clark County fire inspector Amanda Wildermuth told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that possession and use of illegal fireworks is a misdemeanor.

STATELINE, Nev. (AP) — Tourism officials at Lake Tahoe say that obtaining Nevada-based sponsorship for their annual Fourth of July and Labor Day fireworks shows will help free them from California regulators after settling a lawsuit over pollution. Tourism officials say the change means primary regulation of the fireworks falls to Nevada officials.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Police in California say they arrested a New York man and seized 38 pounds of marijuana with an estimated value of more than $100,000 during a drug bust north of Lake Tahoe on Interstate 80 near Truckee. Truckee police say 52-year-old Eric Draffen was booked into the Nevada County Jail on three counts of narcotics trafficking, and possession for sales. Police say a search turned up several cardboard boxes and plastic containers with 31 heat-sealed plastic packages of pot.
