BAGHDAD (AP) — Residents of the Iraqi city of Tikrit say fighting has been continuing in a northern neighborhood of the city. Government troops have moved to retake control of the mostly-Sunni city, which was captured by Sunni insurgents during their offensive in the country's north and west earlier this month.
BAGHDAD (AP) — The al-Qaida breakaway group that has seized much of northern Syria and huge tracks of neighboring Iraq has formally declared the creation of an Islamic state in the territory under its control. It's not clear just what practical impact the declaration will have on the ground in Syria and Iraq. The announcement came in an audio statement posted online.
TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel's prime minister has made his most detailed response so far to the gains made by Sunni extremists fighting in Iraq. Benjamin Netanyahu is calling for independence for Kurds in northern Iraq, as part of a broader alliance with moderate forces across the region. In a policy speech today, Netanyahu also said Israel will have to maintain a long-term military presence in the West Bank, even after any future peace agreement with the Palestinians.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The police chief in New Orleans says the early-morning shooting in the French Quarter was carried out by two men who "got angry at each other and shot at each other." The gunfire left nine people wounded, including one in critical condition. The shooting took place on Bourbon Street, just two blocks from historic Jackson Square.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Authorities in Philadelphia are investigating how a metal security grate detached and fell from the front of an Italian ice shop yesterday, killing a 3-year-old girl. Dozens of people tried to rescue her, including members of a fraternity that was holding a fundraiser at the store. Wynter Larkin was pronounced dead at a hospital.
