KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's president is trying to keep his peace plan on track. Petro Poroshenko spoke today in a four-way call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the leaders of France and Germany. The European Union has given Russia and the pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine until tomorrow to take a series of steps. Otherwise, the EU is warning that it's ready to impose new sanctions on Russia. A statement from the Ukrainian leader's office says he's willing to maintain a cease-fire at least until tomorrow evening.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The alleged mastermind of the attacks in Benghazi, Libya, remains in custody -- though authorities aren't saying where. Ahmed Abu Khattala (hah-TAH'-lah) pleaded not guilty during a court appearance yesterday in Washington. He'd been flown in from a U.S. Navy ship, where he'd been questioned since his capture in Libya by U.S. special forces in a nighttime raid two weeks ago. Another court hearing is set for Wednesday.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia police have identified the 3-year-old girl who was killed by a falling security grate at an Italian ice shop. They say Wynter Larkin was visiting the store in north Philadelphia with her mother, who was attending a fundraiser yesterday for a sorority and fraternity. That's when witnesses say the security grate fell from the front of the store onto the girl. Authorities are checking all of the other buildings on the block, in particular, their security grates. But at this point, a police official says the incident appears to be "a horrible tragedy."
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The actor who became known for his role as Anthony, the lovable ex-con on the sitcom "Designing Women," has died. Meshach (MEE'-shak) Taylor was 67. His agent says he died of cancer yesterday at his home near Los Angeles. He also co-starred in the TV comedy "Dave's World," and guest-starred on many other series.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The new "Transformers" movie has chalked up the biggest opening weekend of any film so far this year. It's earned $100 million this weekend -- just in the United States. The previous installment took in about $98 million during its opening weekend three years ago.
