Light winds forecast near AZ wildfire...Cruise ship cleared to sail after fire forces return to port

VERNON, Ariz. (AP) — Another forecast of light winds today is serving as encouragement to crews working on an 8 square mile wildfire in eastern Arizona's White Mountains. The fire didn't grow yesterday as firefighters used diminished winds to make some progress, though there is still no containment on the blaze. A total of 37 summer homes remain evacuated as a precaution.

SEATTLE (AP) — Holland America says a cruise ship is expected to sail again today after a boiler room fire forced it to return to port in Seattle. Officials say it was a small fire which was quickly controlled. The ship carried nearly 3,000 people. The Coast Guard inspected the ship and cleared it to operate.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Authorities are trying to figure out why a metal security grate detached and fell from the facade of an Italian ice shop in Philadelphia, killing a 3-year-old girl. The girl was at the Rita's Water Ice store in north Philadelphia where a fundraiser for a sorority and fraternity was underway. Fraternity members lifted the grate off the girl.

JERUSALEM (AP) — About 1,000 African migrants are camping by the border with Egypt after marching out of an Israeli detention center in protest of their treatment. The Eritrean and Sudanese migrants left the open detention facility Friday, saying Israel has not processed their claims for asylum. The migrants are imploring the U.N. to help resettle them elsewhere.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — NASA says a test of new technology designed bring heavier spacecraft — and one day even astronauts — safely down to Mars, was a qualified success. The parachute of the Low Density Supersonic Decelerator vehicle got tangled on the way down but didn't fully deploy. The vehicle made a hard landing in the Pacific Ocean.
