PORTO SEGURO, Brazil (AP) — The World Cup is over for Switzerland's back-up forward Mario Gavranovic after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Saturday.
The Swiss football federation says Gavranovic will fly home Sunday to undergo surgery.
Gavranovic was injured in a training session ahead of Switzerland's Round of 16 match against Argentina in Sao Paulo on Tuesday.
He is not expected play again this year, the Swiss FA said.
Gavranovic had yet to appear in the World Cup. Haris Seferovic and Josip Drmic have been selected as central strikers by coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.
