BRUSSELS (AP) — Ukraine's president has extended a cease-fire in the nation's east for three more days. President Petro Poroshenko's office said that the weeklong cease-fire that ended Friday has been extended until 10 p.m. local time Monday. A leader of pro-Russian insurgents said today they would also extend the cease-fire if Poroshenko does so.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq's top Shiite cleric is applying even more pressure Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani called on the country's politicians to agree on the next prime minister and other top leaders by the time the new legislature meets on Tuesday. Al-Maliki is blamed in part for the Sunni revolt spearheaded by an extremist group. In Washington, a defense official says armed drones are in operation near Baghdad to conduct surveillance and to protect U.S. interests.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A review ordered by President Barack Obama of the troubled Veterans Affairs health care system finds that medical care for veterans is beset by "significant and chronic system failures." The conclusion verifies problems raised by whistleblowers and internal and congressional investigators. The review also found that a 14-day standard for scheduling veterans' medical appointments is unrealistic and has been susceptible to manipulation.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia jury has ordered Honda to pay $55.3 million for a rollover accident that left a man paralyzed. Lawyers for Carlos Martinez argued during a nine-day trial that a faulty seat belt design in his Acura Integra caused the permanent injuries he suffered in 2010. Honda says it will appeal.
DETROIT (AP) — General Motors says it's recalling another 474,000 vehicles worldwide including new pickup trucks and SUVs for a transmission problem. It's the 48th recall for the company so far this year, covering more than 20 million vehicles. Today's three recalls cover almost 467,000 four-wheel-drive Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, as well as GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban SUVs.
