ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Public Broadcasting will begin airing on an Atlanta station despite objections from backers of the student-run 88.5 FM frequency.
The switch is scheduled for Sunday, pushed back from the original plan of June 2. Alumni and backers of the Georgia State University student station, known as WRAS, have protested the deal between the university and GPB since it was announced in May.
University officials say they will pursue options to keep student DJs on the air during the day using another frequency. Spokesman Don Hale says the university has hired consulting engineers to secure a spot for WRAS but couldn't complete the work before public radio programs begin airing on 88.5.
Hale says student programming will be available online, 24 hours a day.
