STILLWATER, Minn. (AP) — The state of Minnesota will pay a Stillwater prison inmate $130,000 to settle a lawsuit claiming negligence in his medical care.
Thirty-two-year-old Erick Thomas suffered permanent nerve damage after he was left partially paralyzed in his cell in 2012. An examining nurse failed to call a doctor and wrote "faker" in Thomas' medical file. A nursing supervisor later ordered the file comment to be destroyed, but another nurse kept a copy.
The Star Tribune (http://strib.mn/1jUhyVJ ) says Thomas is permanently numb on the right side of his body as a result of a blood clot that surgeons found pressing on his spine, which nearly killed him.
The Department of Corrections says reaching the settlement doesn't mean that wrongdoing was found.
