TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Senate has passed a bill that would place a moratorium on transferring developmentally disabled residents with out-of-state back to New Jersey.
The measure passed on 37 to 1 vote Thursday.
It comes in response to a state plan to transfer back more than 450 people from facilities elsewhere to group homes in New Jersey.
The state is already closing some in-state facilities and moving residents to group homes, something that officials say is better for them but some of their family members oppose.
By bringing the residents back, the state could also gain more than $20 million in federal matching funds.
The bill would place a moratorium on transfers back until the state has a comprehensive plan for the moves.
The Assembly has not taken it up.
