LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Nov. 10 trial date is set for a suspected gang member accused of gunning down an off-duty Las Vegas police officer during a botched robbery at the officer's North Las Vegas home in 2009. A judge yesterday scheduled Prentice Marshal's death penalty trial in the slaying of Officer Trevor Nettleton. That's seven weeks after a separate Sept. 22 death penalty trial for co-defendant Saul Williams Jr. Two other co-defendants pleaded guilty to lesser charges and are in prison.

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — A judge has ordered a mental evaluation for a 73-year-old Sparks man charged with murder in the shooting of two unarmed trespassers. Wayne Burgarello insists that he acted in self-defense under Nevada's "stand your ground" law. He killed a man and seriously injured a woman he found in a vacant house he owns.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Nevada residents can now wear their state pride on their belts. The state's sesquicentennial committee has unveiled limited-edition belt buckles marking Nevada's 150th birthday. They made their debut this week at the Reno Rodeo, which runs through June 28. Proceeds from the buckles, which sell for $100 each, benefit the Nevada 150 Foundation.

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Joan Osborne and Jefferson Starship are among the entertainers scheduled to headline this Labor Day weekend at the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off in Sparks. Organizers announced the lineup yesterday for the six-day, street festival that runs Aug. 27-Sept. 1 at Victorian Square.
