ELGIN, N.D. (AP) — Authorities in Elgin say they are investigating reports of family pets being poisoned.
Grant County Sheriff Steve Bay says residents have called his office to report that when they took their sick dogs to the veterinarian, they were told the animals showed symptoms of ingesting rat or mouse bait poison.
KXNews reports (http://bit.ly/1leJmni ) 10 dogs have apparently been poisoned in the southwestern North Dakota town, and one has died.
Bay says the local vet is getting a lot of calls about the dogs and that the investigation is one of the department's top priorities.
Stephanie Lince says her two dogs became sick with symptoms including continuous coughing as if they were choking. Their health has since improved.
Lince says that "everyone is just paranoid of losing their animals."
