SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A monument to a slain Utah County sergeant has been unveiled in the fallen officer's hometown.
A ceremony in American Fork Tuesday evening honored Sgt. Cory Wride and unveiled the plaque in Robinson Park. It features imaged of Wride as a child and an adult, and an inscription about sacrifice and forgiveness.
Wride was shot and killed Jan. 30 when he stopped to check on a pickup on the shoulder of State Road 73 near Eagle Mountain.
Police say the officer was sitting in his patrol car when 27-year-old Jose Angel Garcia-Jauregui fired at him through the rear window.
The shooter reportedly fled, shooting and wounding another officer in Santaquin.
The suspect died from injuries sustained in police fire.
