LONDON (AP) — Five-time champion Venus Williams, who is seeded 30th, overcame a slow start to advance to the second round at Wimbledon today. This marks just the second time in her last 10 Grand Slam tournaments that Williams has reached the third round. Also winning today has been Australian Open champ Li Na (lee nah) who is seeded second.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The College World Series will come to an end tonight, barring a rain out. The best-of-3 series is tied at 1-1 after Virginia's 7-2 win over Vanderbilt last night.
KANSAS CITY (AP) — Clayton Kershaw's bid for back-to-back no hitters came to an end quickly last night as Kansas City's Eric Hosmer singled in the first inning. From there, it was all Kershaw as he and the Dodgers blanked the Royals 2-0 in Kansas City. The only man to toss back-to-back no-no's was Johnny Vander Meer in 1938.
UNDATED (AP) — The U.S. resumes World Cup play tomorrow with a Group G match against Germany. There are several scenarios in which the U.S. could advance to the knockout round. The Americans will have to play without Jozy Altidore (JOH'-zee AL'-tih-door) who is still recovering from an injury he suffered in the first match with Ghana.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins came away with most of the hardware from last night's NHL Awards ceremony in Las Vegas. The forward won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player and the Ted Lindsay Award as the outstanding player in the league as voted by the players association. He already had earned the Art Ross Trophy as the league's scoring champion.
