WASHINGTON (AP) — The political future of one of the U.S. Senate's longest serving members is being decided in a runoff in Mississippi. Six-term Republican Sen. Thad Cochran has a narrow lead over tea party favorite Chris McDaniel. In a last-ditch effort, Cochran reached out to traditionally Democratic voters — blacks and union members. In Oklahoma, Rep. James Lankford has won the GOP nomination outright for the open U.S. Senate seat vacated by Tom Coburn.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says two teams of special forces and about 90 advisers, intelligence analysts, commandos and some other support personnel needed to set up a joint operations center are in Baghdad. A spokesman says another four teams of special forces should arrive in the next few days. The advisers' goal is to assess Iraqi forces who will take on Sunni militants who have taken large swaths of the country.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron have discussed Ukraine and the possible implementation of additional sanctions on Russia for its intervention in Ukraine. The West could delay sanctions on Russia's economic sectors because of positive signals from Moscow. President Vladimir Putin has called for a cease-fire extension in eastern Ukraine between government troops and pro-Russia separatists.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden says protecting gay rights is a defining mark of a civilized nation and must trump national cultures and social traditions. Biden spoke today in Washington at a gathering of U.S. and international gay rights advocates. Biden said that across the federal government, agency officials have been instructed to make the promotion of gay rights abroad a priority.

MIAMI (AP) — LeBron James is heading back to free agency. The four-time NBA MVP has told the Miami Heat that he is opting out of the final two years of his contract. His agent, Rich Paul, adds that James will become a free agent on July 1. That does not mean James is leaving Miami - but there's no guarantee that he'll be in a Heat uniform next season.
