BAGHDAD (AP) — A weeklong fight for control of Iraq's largest oil refinery continues. A top military official says helicopter gunships today attacked what appeared to be formations of Sunni militants preparing for another assault on the facility. The country's chief military spokesman is denying reports that the refinery has fallen to the rebels. Government aircraft also reportedly bombed a town near the Syrian border, days after it was seized by Islamic extremists.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Authorities are reporting damage to homes, downed power lines and uprooted trees as a storm producing tornadoes moved across the Indianapolis area. Forecasters say a tornado struck just southwest of Indianapolis, before the storm then headed into the city itself.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are closing lower after an afternoon slide erased early gains in major U.S. indexes. The market was slightly higher in the morning following encouraging news on new home sales and consumer confidence. Stocks drifted lower in the afternoon and ended in the red for the day. The Dow fell 119 points. The S&P lost 12 points, and the Nasdaq composite fell 18 points.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Great Recession and the slow recovery have sharply widened the gap between the wealthiest Americans and everyone else. That's according to a study that underscores the unevenness of wealth gains since the recession ended. The richest 5 percent had 24 times the wealth of the median household in 2013 — up substantially from 16.5 times as much in 2007, according to a study by University of Michigan researchers.

MIAMI (AP) — LeBron James is heading back to free agency. The four-time NBA MVP has told the Miami Heat that he is opting out of the final two years of his contract. His agent, Rich Paul, adds that James will become a free agent on July 1. That does not mean James is leaving Miami - but there's no guarantee that he'll be in a Heat uniform next season.
