JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi University for Women will expand its waivers of out-of-state tuition charges.
The university won College Board approval Thursday to waive the higher charges for all residents of Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee; active military members, their spouses and children; students within an academic year of completing a degree and children and grandchildren of alumni.
In-state undergraduate tuition and fees cost $5,640 for two full semesters at MUW, both for the just-ended and upcoming school years, while out-of-state tuition runs $15,360. As at most schools, many students from both groups pay less because of financial aid.
The move expands an earlier, more limited waiver that the board had approved. That waiver plan approved in 2012 allowed MUW to waive additional charges to holders of regional scholarships, students from four nearby Alabama counties, and students from the Birmingham and Mobile areas in Alabama and the Memphis, Tennessee, area. It also allowed waivers to children of alumni.
Mississippi universities increasingly depend on tuition, as state appropriations have stagnated in recent years.
The Legislature in 2012 allowed universities to reduce tuition to in-state levels for some non-Mississippians. The schools lobbied for the measure, saying public colleges in other states were waiving charges for Mississippi students. All eight public universities have adopted waiver plans, with Delta State University and Mississippi Valley State University allowing all students to pay in-state rates.
