Kerry will meet with Egypt's president, seeking to convince Abdel Fattah el-Sissi (AHB'-del fat-AH' el-SEE'-see) to embrace more moderate policies to achieve stability — and deliver more American aid. Washington says there are small encouraging signs.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Sunni militants have dealt another blow to Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki by seized another town in Iraq's western Anbar province. Rutba is the fourth to fall in two days in what is shaping up to be a major offensive in one of Iraq's most restive regions. Officials say Rutba residents are negotiating to leave after an army unit on the town's outskirts threatened to start shelling.
JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says there's trouble in the Golan Heights near civil war-torn Syria. The military says a civilian vehicle was targeted by forces from neighboring Syria on Sunday in an attack that killed a 15-year-old boy and prompted Israeli tanks to fire on Syrian government targets. Israel says the attack was intentional.
HONG KONG (AP) — There are no results yet, but officials say an unofficial referendum on democratic reform in Hong Kong has drawn more than 625,000 ballots either in person, online or through a smartphone app. Beijing blasted the vote in the specially administered Chinese city as illegal. Tensions have soared over how much say residents of the former British colony can have in choosing their next leader.
MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Wash. (AP) — Searchers have suspended efforts to find a missing outdoors writer on Mount Rainier after a female body was found and recovered. There's been no announcement yet that the body has been identified. Karen Sykes, believed to have been working on a story, hasn't been seen since she separated from her hiking partner on Wednesday.
