BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Firefighters have contained a wildfire north of Boise. The Bureau of Land Management says the Dump Fire was contained Friday night after it burned about 425 acres in steep, rough terrain southwest of Horseshoe Bend. No structures were damaged although there may have been voluntary evacuations Friday.
BONNERS FERRY, Idaho (AP) — An Australian company disputes that it is planning to mine rare earth elements and thorium in northern Idaho. Although those materials are abundant at Hall Mountain, MMG Limited insists its exploration program is entirely focused on zinc. Sally Cox is general manager of stakeholder relations at MMG. Cox says in a statement that MMG's exploration is preliminary and decisions about further exploration will be made after the current exploration program. The U.S. Forest Service recently granted MMG permission to conduct the exploration.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Sixteen grizzlies have been captured so far this year by teams gathering information that will be used this fall to decide whether to propose lifting federal protections of the bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team captured the grizzlies in Montana and Wyoming, while efforts in eastern Idaho have just started. The team usually captures about 60 bears each year. An estimated 740 grizzly bears roam the 19,000-square-mile Yellowstone ecosystem that includes portions of the three states plus Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park.
CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) — An ultralight aircraft pilot in southwestern Idaho clipped a power line and crashed, knocking out power to about 130 customers. The Canyon County Sheriff's Office says the pilot suffered minor injuries and walked away from the crash that occurred about 9 p.m. Thursday. KBOI-TV reports that the crash occurred in a rural area west of Caldwell.
