MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Wash. (AP) — Officials say they have yet to identify a female body found on Mount Rainier in the area where search teams were looking for a prominent outdoors writer. But the search for 70-year-old Karen Sykes has now been suspended. Sykes hasn't been seen since she separated from her hiking partner on Wednesday. She was reportedly working on a story.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A man is in custody in California on suspicion of three counts of murder. Police say Carlos Gallopa is suspected of killing two young brothers and one sibling's fiancee. Two victims were found last Christmas Eve, shot in the head in the parking lot of a San Diego shopping mall. Another was discovered in the trunk of a car 90 miles away.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The government is making an effort to take the pressure off the Border Patrol in the nation's busiest corridor for illegal crossings. Officials say nearly 300 Central American migrants will be flown from south Texas to California for processing. The flights are the government's latest response to a surge of Central Americans entering Texas' Rio Grande Valley, where the Border Patrol has made more than 174,000 arrests since Oct. 1.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi military officials say more than 2,000 troops have been dispatched to the site of a key dam in the city of Haditha to protect it against a possible attack by advancing Sunni militants. The insurgents led by an al-Qaida breakaway group expanded their offensive, capturing three strategic towns and the first border crossing with Syria to fall on the Iraqi side.
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin a cease-fire in eastern Ukraine won't work unless negotiations also begin. Putin is expressing conditional support for Ukraine's unilateral cease-fire in its battle against pro-Russian separatists and he's appealing to both sides to halt all military operations.
