MOSCOW (AP) — Russian forces are on a weeklong combat alert starting today including an exercise involving airborne troops. The order by Russian President Vladimir Putin comes a day after Ukraine's president ordered a cease-fire with pro-Russian rebels in the eastern part of his country in a conflict that has left about 300 people dead and displaced over 34,000. The Kremlin has dismissed the cease-fire order.
WASHINGTON (AP) — New U.S. sanctions are in effect against several pro-Russian separatist leaders in Ukraine, even as Russian troops have been ordered to combat alert. The Obama administration imposed sanctions amid renewed accusations that Russia is providing the separatists with tanks and heavy weaponry.
CAIRO (AP) — Lawyers say a ruling today by an Egyptian court, confirming the death sentences of more than 180 Islamists, can be overturned on appeal. The ruling includes the top leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. The case is rooted in retaliatory attacks on a police station in the southern city of Minya on Aug. 14, after police dispersed an Islamist sit-in in Cairo, killing hundreds.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Officials say a border crossing between Syria and Iraq has been captured by Sunni militants after a daylong battle in which they killed some 30 Iraqi troops. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and allied militants have carved out a large fiefdom astride the Iraqi-Syrian border but the control of crossings allows them to more easily move weapons and heavy equipment to different battlefields.
WASHINGTON (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says a prolife position doesn't end at birth. In declaring his opposition to abortion is remarks to religious conservatives yesterday, Christie also says "you need to be pro-life for the whole life." Christie is considered a possible contender for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.
