Iraq order point with Syria falls to militants...Christie expresses abortion opposition

BAGHDAD (AP) — Security officials say a daylong battle in which about 30 Iraqi troops were killed has left a crossing on the border with Syria in the hands of Sunni militants who have seized a large swath of Iraq recently. The capture of the border crossing deals a further blow to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government, which has struggled to push back against Islamic extremists and allied militants.

WASHINGTON (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he's opposed to abortion, calling every life a "gift from God." In his first major address to social conservatives, the potential candidate for the Republican nomination for president in 2016 also told the Faith and Freedom Coalition that protecting human life must continue after birth.

SAN MATEO, Calif. (AP) — Even as the Food and Drug Administration looks to impose e-cigarette regulations, a California congresswoman wants to enact legislation on the subject. Rep. Jackie Speier has unveiled legislation that would regulate electronic cigarettes in the same way as typical tobacco products, including limits on advertising. She accuses the industry of targeting children and teenagers.

SEATTLE (AP) — Mount Rainier National Park officials say they'll continue searching at daybreak for a prominent outdoors writer missing since Wednesday. Friends of Karen Sykes sat they are anxious but hopeful that searchers will find her safely sheltered somewhere. Sykes is well-known in the Northwest hiking community and has written numerous hiking stories for online publications and newspapers.

THREE FORKS, Mont. (AP) — The cause of a fiery collision between a fire engine and a pickup truck along a rural Montana highway remains under investigation. Six people were killed Thursday, including a family of five and a volunteer fire chief who was return to a small town near Helena with the just repaired fire truck. The tight band of firefighters in Three Forks is still reeling from the news.
