WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration says it will open new detention facilities to house immigrant families caught crossing the border illegally, amid a surge from Central America. A Homeland Security official says the administration is actively looking for additional space to house immigrant families, primarily mothers with young children, caught crossing the Mexican border illegally.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration has granted an array of new benefits to same-sex couples, including those who live in states where gay marriage is against the law. The new measures range from Social Security and veterans benefits to work leave for caring for sick spouses. They are part of President Barack Obama's efforts to expand whatever protections he can offer to gays and lesbians.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City says it's reached a settlement with five men who were falsely convicted in the vicious 1989 rape and beating of a Central Park jogger. The amount is reported to be $40 million. Five black and Hispanic defendants were convicted in the attack on a white woman. They served six to 13 years in prison before their convictions were thrown out in 2002 because of evidence connecting someone else to the attack.
CHICAGO (AP) — Donald Trump is visiting Chicago to see his name in lights. The billionaire developer plans to show up in about two weeks to view the 20-foot-tall letters that spell T-R-U-M-P on his skyscraper along the Chicago River. Trump has been in a spat with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel over the giant sign, with the mayor calling it "architecturally tasteless."
