AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Paine College in east Georgia has been placed on probation by its accrediting body.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges implemented the sanction after it said the private school in Augusta failed to correct problems during the past two years.

The Augusta Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1plCeJV ) that Thursday's action is the most severe and final sanction possible before accreditation is revoked.

Commission spokeswoman Pamela Cravey said the college is in violation of nine standards relating to fiscal stability, institutional policy, qualified officers, control of finances, control of sponsored research, institutional environment, and federal student financial aid programs.

Paine College officials did not comment to the Augusta newspaper on Thursday.
