BAGHDAD (AP) — Rivals of Iraq's Shiite prime minister are mounting a campaign to force him out of office. They're motivated by the turmoil created by a Sunni insurgency spearheaded by extremists. Challengers have the support of Western and regional backers. While announcing that 300 special forces advisers will head to Iraq, President Barack Obama said only leaders "with an inclusive agenda" will be able to help Iraqis through the crisis.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. (AP) — The population of Lawrenceville, Virginia, is only 1,500. But a crowd packed a 900-seat high school auditorium to voice their opposition to a plan to bring hundreds of Central American children and teens to a temporary shelter. Federal officials apologized for not notifying locals of a plan to put the children at a shuttered college. More than 47,000 children, primarily from Central America, have been apprehended at the Mexican border since the start of the budget year.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre is tossing his support for Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran in a new TV ad paid for by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is spending $500,000 in TV ads for Cochran. Campaigning for challenger Chris McDaniel -- a tea party favorite -- are Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City Council have agreed on a $75 billion budget proposal. De Blasio is the first Democrat in nearly 20 years to capture City Hall. He did it with a campaign based on a pledge to combat the growing income inequality in the nation's largest city. The spending plan avoids any city worker layoffs or tax hikes. It increases spending to schools and social services but does not include the council recommendation to hire 1,000 new police officers.

NEW YORK (AP) — Kraft Foods says it's recalling its Velveeta cheese product from Walmart stores in as many as 12 states, mostly in the Midwest. The cheese doesn't have the proper amount of sorbic acid -- a preservative. That could cause premature spoilage or food-borne illnesses. About 260 cases of Velveeta are being recalled. It was sent to three Walmart distribution centers and could have been shipped to as many as 12 states.
