BAGHDAD (AP) — The Sunni extremists who have overrun cities and towns in northern Iraq say they intend to take the battle to Baghdad and cities farther south where revered Shiite shrines are located. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is vowing to "liberate every inch" of territory already captured by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. is sending a small number of military personnel to Iraq to help keep State Department facilities safe. One military official says about 100 Marines and Army soldiers have been sent to Baghdad to bolster security at the U.S. Embassy. Some embassy staff members are being temporarily moved to other parts of Iraq and to Jordan amid growing violence.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan is going after local and al-Qaida linked foreign militants in a tribal region near the Afghan border. The Pakistani army says it has launched a "comprehensive operation" against militants in North Waziristan. It's one of the last areas in northwest Pakistan where a large-scale operation hasn't been undertaken against militants.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — Residents in a central California community that's being threatened by a wildfire in and around the Sequoia National Forest are being told to evacuate. The U.S. Forest Service says more than 3.1 square miles have been charred by the blaze and at least two structures have been destroyed. More than 500 homes are at risk.
BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) — Loved ones are remembering the 19-year-old student killed by a gunman at a small Seattle college earlier this month as a profound thinker who loved to dance. Portland, Oregon-area native Paul Lee's memorial service was held Sunday at a church in Beaverton. Albert Lee said his younger brother was compassionate and taught him "love can comfort all."
