LEHI — A 5-year-old girl is dead and four people are injured following a rollover crash on I-15 Sunday.

Around 7:05 a.m., Jairo Figueroa, 35, of Midvale, was driving his Ford Explorer south on I-15 at milepost 284 with his wife, Gabriela Alvarado, 31, in the passenger seat and his daughters, Alondra, 5, Cynthia, 4, and 1-year-old Evet in the back seat when the tread on the vehicle’s right rear tire separated and came off, causing the car to drift to the right side of the road, Utah Highway Patrol said.

Figueroa lost control of the vehicle and it rolled on the driver’s side after hitting a concrete barrier. Alondra was ejected in the crash and died when the vehicle landed on top of her.

According to UHP, there were two booster seats and one infant car seat in the vehicle, but it appeared that the booster seats were not used correctly, if at all.

UHP said proper use of a seat belt with the booster seat would have prevented Alondra from being ejected and killed.

A plea for parents to make sure their children are correctly restrained was included in UHP’s press release.

“If you have questions on how to install a infant car seat, how to use a booster seat, or whether your child is ready to use the car's seat belts, you can come to your local UHP office or county health department and ask for someone who is trained in Child Passenger Safety," Trooper Jacob Cox said in the release. “Free of charge, we will check your children and help them ride safely in your vehicle. Additionally, many area hospitals also have Child Passenger Safety Technicians on staff. Parents, please let us help you keep your little ones safe.”

information regarding the condition of the other family members was not immediately released.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
