WASHINGTON (AP) — The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush is heading to the Persian Gulf as President Barack Obama considers possible military options for Iraq. The carrier and two other U.S. warships accompanying it carry fighter jets and Tomahawk missiles, which could easily reach Iraq, where Islamic insurgents have been rapidly seizing territory. The U.S. ships are expected to reach the Gulf sometime today.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki (NOO'-ree ahl-MAHL'-ih-kee) is calling for the unity among all Iraqis in the face of an Islamic insurgency. Sunni militants continue to gain territory north of the capital and are threatening cities with revered religious shrines. Thousands of Shiite men have responded to a call to arms from Iraq's top Shiite cleric. But al-Maliki says that call is meant to protect the country and its holy shrines and is not directed against Sunnis.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — President Barack Obama says denying climate change is like arguing the moon is made of cheese. In a commencement address to graduates of the University of California, Irvine, today, Obama issued a call to action on global warming. But he says too many members of Congress "automatically reject the scientific evidence" while others are afraid of being "run out of town by a radical fringe that thinks climate science is a liberal plot." Obama's comments come two weeks after announcing a contentious plan to dramatically cut pollution from power plants.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas police officer killed in an ambush at a pizza shop is being remembered as a Renaissance man, a great police officer and a loving family man. More than 2,400 people gathered to pay tribute to Alyn Beck today. The 41-year-old was gunned down while eating lunch last Sunday along with officer Igor Soldo. Investigators say they were killed by a couple with anti-government views who later died in a shootout with police.

UNDATED (AP) — French drugmaker Sanofi and U.S. medical device manufacturer Medtronic are teaming up on a project to develop new drugs and devices for diabetes care. The two major companies announced what they're calling a "global strategic alliance," which will focus on developing drug-device combinations and providing care-management services to simplify insulin treatment. About 30 million Americans have diabetes.
