SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs have won their fifth NBA championship in 16 seasons by whipping Miami 104-87 in Game 5, ending the Heat's two-year reign. The Spurs trailed 22-6 before outscoring the Heat by 35 over the next 2 ½ quarters. Kawhi (kah-WY') Leonard finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Patty Mills shot 5-for-8 from 3-point range in adding 17 points in less than 18 minutes off the bench.
PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Martin Kaymer (KY'-mur) has tied the fourth-largest margin of victory at the U.S. Open, finishing eight strokes ahead of Erik Compton and Rickie Fowler. Kaymer is the seventh player to lead the tournament wire-to-wire, closing with a 1-under 69 for a 9-under total. It's the second major title for Kaymer, who claimed the PGA Championship in 2010.
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Jimmie Johnson won for the third time in four races by finally conquering Michigan International Speedway. Johnson surged ahead with about 10 laps remaining and held off Kevin Harvick to earn his first victory in 25 career starts at MIS. Brad Keselowski finished third after two straight runner-up showings at Dover and Pocono.
UNDATED (AP) — Switzerland won its World Cup opener by scoring late in stoppage time to beat Ecuador 2-1. Argentina also earned a 2-1 triumph over Bosnia as Lionel Messi scored the eventual game-winner in the 65th minute. And Karim Benzema scored twice as France opened World Cup play with a 3-0 win over Honduras.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — TCU and Virginia have reached the winner's bracket in the College World Series. Boomer White laced a tiebreaking single while the Horned Frogs were scoring twice in the eighth inning to beat the Red Raiders 3-2.The Cavaliers beat Mississippi 2-1 on Mike Papi's RBI double with two out in the bottom of the ninth.
