COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The development arm of Ohio State University bought and closed two carryout stores to try to reduce crime in a major campus corridor.
The nonprofit Campus Partners paid $1.1 million for the properties near the Columbus campus and changed the locks on the two stores on Thursday. The property will be sold for redevelopment with hopes of attracting new residents to the area.
Most of the purchase cost is covered by a grant from Ohio State. Money was also contributed by the Columbus Foundation and Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing.
Officials say it's another step in revitalizing the neighborhood bordered by downtown and Ohio State, an effort that began more than a decade ago in the neighborhood known as Weinland Park.
