LOGAN, Utah (AP) — A Utah father charged with child abuse after police found his 6-year-old son chained to a bed while the man was at work made his first court appearance by video in Logan. The Herald Journal of Logan reports that the judge set bail at $10,000 for the 28-year-old man. He is due back in court Monday.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say a brush fire about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City threatens a dozen homes. Draper City Police say the fire has grown to cover 20 acres. There is no mandatory evacuation in place but authorities are asking people to leave. Authorities in recent weeks said a healthy dose of late spring showers helped improve parched conditions in Utah.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah mountain resorts say more skiers and snowboarders visited their slopes this year for the second consecutive season. The industry marketing group Ski Utah says the 4.1 million day visits during the 2013-14 season marks a nearly 4-percent increase from the year before. The visits came during a below average year for snowfall in the state.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a federal grand jury has indicted a former marketing director at Symantec Corp. on charges of embezzling more than $1.3 million to help fund a lavish lifestyle. Lena Coombs of Highland, Utah, is charged with 26 counts of wire fraud and 10 counts of money laundering for her alleged scheme while working for the tech company in Lyndon, Utah, from 2010 to 2012.
