This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

For Bruce Curtis, 1975 started out as a tough year. He was happy to have a job in the building trade, making a good living and having some form of security. Or so he thought. But during the winter, he got laid off. He decided to visit a hardware store for a job to get him through the hard time. He took the job, not knowing he had just walked into a brand new career. In fact, in 1987, he bought the company, now known as Courtesy Ace Hardware in Delta. And today, he is in the process of a major expansion.

Courtesy Ace Hardware's big news right now is that their brand new store is just months away from opening, nearly doubling their usable square footage. The new store opens September 1, just three blocks to the east of current location.

Customers are even more excited about the expansion than the Courtesy Ace Hardware staff is, especially about increased parking. That's because during busy weekends, it's wall to wall at the current location, so the expanded space will definitely be helpful.

Bruce attributes the growth at Courtesy Ace Hardware to the brand name products they offer, backed by excellent customer service. His staff of 13 employees includes three of his own children who are working their way up through the ranks. In fact, for the last five years running, Courtesy Ace Hardware has received the Platinum Award from the national Ace Hardware team. This award is about 15 items they track on year-over-year growth, how much their customer count is growing and sales per square foot, And in 2013, they received the Pinnacle Award, which puts them in the top 2-3 percent of Ace Hardware stores around the country.

Bruce says their loyal customer base is the main reason for their success, and why he decided to build a brand new Courtesy Ace Hardware. They are in the 90th percentile of Ace stores nationwide for the Ace Rewards program, a customer loyalty program so people who spend money with them and get reward points for future purchases.

For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
