CLEVELAND (AP) — A man suspected of shooting his 2-year-old son in the head during a dispute with the child's mother has been charged with aggravated murder.
A police spokeswoman says a court appearance is set Thursday for 23-year-old Derrice Alexander.
Police say the toddler, Derrice Alexander Jr., was standing on a staircase landing and was struck when his father fired into the home's window from outside during the dispute early Tuesday. The boy died at a hospital.
Cleveland's police chief says Alexander shouldn't have had a weapon because he's a convicted felon. Court records show he was sentenced in 2011 to serve two years in prison in an assault case.
It wasn't immediately clear if Alexander has an attorney. A message was left with the public defender's office, which previously represented him.
