WASHINGTON (AP) — They're still talking, but it appears a group of senators discussing improvements at Veterans Affairs hospitals won't be able to come to terms this week. Some had hoped to pass a bill before Friday's 70th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Europe in World War II. Up to a dozen lawmakers plan to head to Europe.

CONSTANTA, Romania (AP) — A senior defense official says Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has called the family of released captive Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. Hagel says a rush to judgment about Bergdahl is "unfair" to his family. Bergdahl is believed to have walked away from his unit in June 2009, and the Taliban captured him. He was released Saturday in exchange for five top Taliban officials in U.S. custody.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Ukraine's president-elect says he opposes calls to institute martial law in his country's east, and that he supports peaceful solutions to the crisis there. Petro Poroshenko spoke today in Warsaw after meeting with U.S. and European leaders. It's his first foreign trip since he was elected last month.

NEW YORK (AP) — A man has been arrested in a knife attack that killed a 6-year-old boy and critically injured a 7-year-old girl in a New York City public housing building. Police say 27-year-old Daniel St. Hubert was arrested tonight. Police say the attacker used a steak knife to stab each child multiple times. The children had been headed to get ice cream.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays say former major league player, manager and coach Don Zimmer has died. Don Zimmer, a popular fixture in professional baseball for 66 years, was 83. Zimmer was still working for the Tampa Bay Rays as a senior adviser.
