INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — More than 400 previously unseen black-and-white photographs of China's student-led 1989 Tiananmen Square pro-democracy movement can now be viewed online.
University Library at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis has digitized photographs taken by an IUPUI professor and added them to the library's online digital collections.
In 1989, college students in Beijing universities turned mourning for the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party into a grassroots movement that called for political reform.
The movement ended with the killing of hundreds of protesters during a military crackdown on June 4, 1989.
Thousands of photographs were taken, including the now-iconic image of a protester facing down a military tank.
The photographer, Edgar Huang, is a member of the IUPUI faculty.
