BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (AP) — President Barack Obama has told U.S. troops in Afghanistan that "America's war in Afghanistan will come to a responsible end" by the close of the year. He's promising a decision soon on keeping a small contingent of troops in Afghanistan to help protect gains made over nearly 13 years of combat. Obama's surprise visit to Bagram (bah-GRAHM') Air Field is his first trip to the war zone since 2012.

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Libya's parliament has approved an Islamist-backed government despite boycotts from non-Islamists and threats from a renegade general who says the parliament has lost its legitimacy. The general has been leading an offensive against Islamists and their allied militias and had warned the Islamist-dominated parliament against convening today. It met under heavy security in a palace east of the capital.

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — Tunisian authorities say they have arrested three suspected Islamist terrorists near the Libyan border and uncovered a terror plot targeting industrial and tourist sites and politicians. The Interior Ministry says the suspects are Tunisians from neighboring Libya who are backed by fighting groups in Libya.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — An exit poll shows billionaire candy-maker Petro Poroshenko is the winner of today's presidential election in Ukraine. The poll, conducted by three respected Ukrainian survey agencies, gives the tycoon getting 55.9 percent of the vote and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko (YOOL'-yah tee-moh-SHEN'-koh) coming in a distant second with 12.9 percent. Full results are expected to be announced tomorrow.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A storm far off Mexico's coast has rapidly grown into the strongest May hurricane on modern record for the Eastern Pacific. Hurricane Amanda has sustained winds of up to 155 mph. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says the Category 4 hurricane doesn't pose a direct threat to land, though rains associated with it could drench much of western and central Mexico.
