SALT LAKE CITY — Officials expect 1300 South to remain closed for several days after a broken water main flooded streets and shut down freeway ramps Friday.
A 16-inch water main beneath 1300 South and I-15 burst about 2 p.m., creating a lake for drivers.
"There was quite a geyser, it was 3 to 4 feet tall," Salt Lake firefighter Aaron Arnesen said. "It was thousands of gallons."
The water was 2 feet deep in some places, and some drivers tried to navigate it, but traffic was quickly diverted, Arnesen said.
Traffic was affected in all directions and all I-15 on- and off-ramps in the area were closed, the Utah Department of Transportation reported. The southbound ramp reopened before 4 p.m. for drivers headed west, but all other ramps remained closed.
UDOT representatives said 1300 South would remain closed between 300 West and 700 West for the next several days as crews work on repairing the road.
Drivers attempting to reach Smith's Ballpark are advised to take Interstate 80 to State Street, 2100 South or 900 West.
