LOS ANGELES (CNN) — Shelly Sterling, wife of Los Angeles Clippers co-owner Donald Sterling, is negotiating the sale of the Clippers with the NBA, according to a source familiar with the situation.

There is an agreement between the two Sterlings for her to negotiate a voluntary sale, and there have been discussions between the NBA and Shelly Sterling, according to the source.

The NBA has banned Donald Sterling for life, and the league is preparing a vote by other team owners that would force the couple, which own the team, to sell the franchise.

The ban and pending vote — along a $2.5 million fine against Donald Sterling — arise from racist remarks that the billionaire made against African-Americans.
