BEIJING (AP) — China's state-run news agency says 31 people have been killed and more than 90 wounded in an early morning attack on a busy street market in the capital of the country's volatile northwestern region of Xinjiang (shihn-jahng). The official Xinhua (shihn-wah) News Agency says the assailants plowed through crowds of shoppers in off-road vehicles and threw explosives out the window before crashing head-on. It's the bloodiest in a series of violent incidents blamed on radical separatist Muslims.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An official in Afghanistan says Taliban fighters have kidnapped 27 police officers during an attack in a northeastern province. The police chief in Badakhshan province says the officers were hiding in a cave during Wednesday's attack. The Taliban has claimed responsibility. The violence comes as the Taliban has launched its annual spring offensive, promising to step up attacks as foreign combat troops get ready to leave the country by the end of the year.

SAN CRISTOBAL, Dominican Republic (AP) — Hospitals and clinics throughout the Caribbean are seeing thousands of people come down with a debilitating virus. They suffer searing headaches, a burning fever and so much pain in their joints they can barely walk or use their hands. Outbreaks of the virus have long made people miserable in Africa and Asia. But it is new to the Caribbean, with the first locally transmitted case documented in December.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Carnival cruise lines is investing about $400 million to clean up the air pollution from the massive diesel engines it uses to power more than 70 cruise ships. The company says it's spending more money and putting the technology in more ships than initially planned. Emissions from oceangoing vessels had largely been unregulated, but in 2010, officials created buffer zones along U.S. coasts and required foreign-flagged ships to reduce pollution.

WASHINGTON (AP) — It's bigger in Texas, even when it comes to the nation's fastest-growing cities. New data from the Census Bureau shows that between 2012 and 2013, San Marcos and Frisco, Texas were the country's top two fast-growing cities in population. Cedar Park, Texas was No. 4. Two other fast-growing cities are in Utah. South Jordan was No. 3 and Lehi was No. 5. V4542
