MAZETH, Russia, Jun 8, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has become part owner of Novaya Gazeta, a Russian newspaper noted for its stand against corruption.
Gorbachev told a meeting of editors and publishers in Mazeth he had purchased 49 percent of the newspaper with Alexander Lebedev, a billionaire and State Duma deputy, the Moscow Times said.
The remaining 51 percent stake belongs to the newspaper's staff, which previously owned the entire paper.
Gorbachev said the paper would be reintroduced with a new format in January. But, he promised its editorial policy would remain independent.
