The recent death of a two-year-old accidentally shot and killed with a rifle by his three-year-old sister has once again brought gun safety into the spotlight. Every time we hear a story like this, our hearts break for all involved. No parent wants to deliberately place their child in harm's way. One preventable threat is a locked and loaded gun.

A new web video by States United to Prevent Gun Violence features a little boy who is a afraid of monsters. His parents tell him there's nothing to be afraid of.

"There is no such this as ‘monsters,' " the mother says.

"But I saw them!" the boy contests.

In the closet he finds a gun. He is fascinated and begins to play with what turns out to be a loaded gun. Ultimately, the weapon discharges, gravely wounding the boy.

Parents, please make sure these monsters in the closet are locked up and properly stored at all times. KSL applauds the efforts of Bullet Proof Kids to educate the public about gun safety. They are encouraging all gun owners to take the pledge to store guns safely.

When you purchase a gun, you should also purchase a lock — and use it.

In Utah, gun deaths now outpace motor vehicle deaths. Many of those deaths are youth suicides. Gun owners should recognize all risks that come with owning a gun in the home — even the unimaginable.

Owning a gun is a right, protecting children is a responsibility.
