NEW YORK (AP) — A retired school principal who says he can barely walk three blocks will be riding in the Tour de Brooklyn bicycle event to raise money for fruits and vegetables in neighborhoods where fresh produce is scarce.

The Daily News reports (http://nydn.us/1oohX95 ) that Solomon Long, who weighs 340 pounds, co-founded a health-conscious group called Seeds in the Middle.

The charity is seeking to raise $30,000 for farmer's markets in Brooklyn's Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhoods.

The 60-year-old Long plans to go as far as he can in the 20-mile Tour de Brooklyn.

Seeds in the Middle is asking people to donate money and guess how long he'll last.
