WASILLA, Alaska (AP) — Officials in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough have broken ground for a new junior-senior high school.
KTUU reports (http://is.gd/1fZI1M) the ceremony was held this week for the $65 million building located in the Knik (KUH'-nick)-Goose Bay Road area of the borough.
The school named for Joe Redington Sr., the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race co-founder.
The school is intended to alleviate overcrowding in Wasilla and accommodate future growth.
Students from the Knik-Goose-Bay area can currently spend up to 90 minutes on a morning bus ride to either the middle or high school in Wasilla.
The new junior-senior high school will open in 2015. But officials expect growth to continue in the area, and plan for both a future elementary and middle school on the same campus.
