SALT LAKE CITY — Returning to his roots, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith visited the University of Utah campus yesterday for a press conference before the school's commencement.

Prior to delivering the commencement speech at the Utes' graduation, Smith answered questions concerning football, values and his journey to the NFL.

While many questions throughout the press conference centered on football, Smith made a point to include his gratitude for university support throughout his career. "I had one offer to get to play college football," he said. "I wanted to be a student-athlete, and Utah gave me that opportunity. I wouldn't be here if I didn't make that decision ... and come to the U."

When questioned about the aspects that made the 2004 University of Utah team so special, Smith emphasized the "singularity" and "selflessness" of the team. He talked about the team having "one goal" in mind. This, along with the talent, carried the team to a perfect 12-0 season.

Football demands much of Smith's time, but he also referred to his education as a "foundation" in his life. Smith emphasized the importance of not only student-athletes, but all students receiving an education as something to fall back on when their athletic career comes to an end. Smith acknowledged that his day in the limelight will come to an end as well.

An important point of advice he'd give the current Utah football team is to "take the next step." Each team has a unique year with different challenges. Alex felt he was on a team that took the "next step" by going to the Pac-12. He challenged the Utes to "be that team that everybody will remember."

Smith's time as an NFL quarterback continues ticking. He commented on the strange feeling of representing the older players in the locker room. With age also comes more responsibility. Smith, now married with two children, is an example for his family. "It's less about talking the talk. They see everything. You certainly have to do things the right way. It's a challenge ... to set the example," he said.

Having undergone many career setbacks, he learned resiliency. Upon the reflection of his time with the Chiefs, Smith commented on their positive season. "It was a reaffirmation with the road I've been headed these last few years." He looks forward to the experiences that await, "Last year's done, and we have a whole new challenge ahead of us."
