KKEARNS — West Valley City police who were wrapping up a chase helped rescue a family from a burning home Wednesday.
Officers were wrapping up details of a car chase around 5.a.m when they saw fire coming out of a nearby home at 4865 S. 4460 West.
The homeowner was awakened by his wife and the two were leaving the house when police arrived. Officers rushed in to help eight more people from two families evacuate the home.
One officer grabbed a garden hose and was able to extinguish the exterior flames on the roof, according to Unified Fire Authority Capt. Zach Robinson. Shortly after, firefighters arrived and extinguished the flames inside the structure by 5:30 a.m.
The blaze caused $30,000 in damage. Investigators determined that the cause of the fire was from a faulty pipe in a wood burning stove.
