BOSTON (AP) — Lawyers for the Boston Marathon bombing suspect will ask a judge Wednesday to toss out some of the charges against him and to ease restrictions on him in prison. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) has pleaded not guilty to a 30-count federal indictment charging him in the twin explosions at last year's marathon that killed three people and wounded more than 260. Tsarnaev's lawyers say many of the charges are redundant and could sway jurors.
BOSTON (AP) — Police in Boston have not released the identity of a man accused in a bombing hoax near the Boston Marathon finish line. Hours after Tuesday's commemoration of the one-year anniversary of the twin bombings that killed three people and wounded dozens of others, police say an officer stopped a man acting suspiciously near the race finish line. He allegedly told the officer that a rice cooker was in his backpack. As a precaution, authorities blew up the backpack and another one found nearby.
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — The son of a 33-year police veteran in Canada is accused in the fatal stabbing of five people at a house party in Calgary, Alberta. Police say 22-year-old Matthew Douglas de Grood picked up a large knife shortly after arriving at the part early Tuesday and stabbed the victims one by one. Officials are calling it the worst mass murder in Calgary's history.
DETROIT (AP) — General Motors plans to ask a federal bankruptcy judge to shield the company from legal claims for conduct that happened before its 2009 bankruptcy. The automaker's strategy is in a motion filed late Tuesday in a Corpus Christi, Texas, federal court case. GM has said at least 13 deaths have been linked to a faulty ignition switch that can knock out the vehicle's engine, power steering, power brakes and air bags. Some 2.6 million GM cars are being recalled.
NEW YORK (AP) — Ford is building a limited-edition Mustang GT to honor the pony car's 50th anniversary. Ford will build only 1,964 special cars, honoring the year the Mustang first went on sale. The 50 Year Limited Edition will come in white or blue, and buyers can choose manual or automatic transmission. There are special chrome highlights around the grille, windows and tail lights. The Limited Edition will also be the only 2015 Mustang with a faux gas cap badge on the rear, where the original cap sat. There's no word yet on the price.
