DINI FUNERAL
Hundreds pay respects to Joe Dini in Yerington
YERINGTON, Nev. (AP) — Several hundred people paid their respects at a funeral mass for Joe Dini in Yerington where the former, longtime Nevada Assembly speaker was described as a quiet, humble man who became a "legislative giant" during three decades in the legislature.
Dozens of past and present state legislators, elected and other government officials crowded into the rural high school gymnasium for Tuesday's service for the state's longest-serving assemblyman. He died April 10 at the age of 85.
Republican U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto and ex-Gov. and -U.S. Sen. Richard Bryan were among the dignitaries on hand. Bryan said he never met a man or woman who did not like Joe Dini. He said he was "the legislative equivalent of a grand master in chess."
NORTH LAS VEGAS-BUDGET
North Vegas finalizing budget to submit to state
LAS VEGAS (AP) — North Las Vegas administrators are finishing a tentative budget to submit to the Nevada Department of Taxation in a bid to avoid a state takeover of city finances and services.
City spokesman Mitch Fox said Tuesday that city officials were finalizing a spending plan after reaching tentative agreements last week with key employee unions to overcome a projected budget deficit of nearly $18 million.
Taxation officials say that under state law, cities need to have their proposed balanced budgets postmarked Tuesday.
Fox says the North Las Vegas budget total is still being worked out.
Last year, the overall city budget was just under $433 million, including $282 million in general fund spending.
A state takeover could lead to large tax increases.
A City Council ratification vote is set May 21.
