WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says it's clear -- based on "overwhelming evidence" -- that Russia is fomenting unrest in eastern Ukraine. Still, there's been no conclusion by the administration yet that Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions warrant broader sanctions on key Russian economic sectors. Putin spoke with President Barack Obama today for the first time in more than two weeks.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Commerce Department reports that retail sales in March rose by the largest amount in 18 months. The big winners included autos and furniture. The 1.1 percent jump was the best showing since September 2012. Sales had fallen in January and December. The increase has sent stock prices higher. The Dow rose 146 points today.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A new report from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office suggests that health insurance subsidies under the president's health care plan will cost a little less than previously thought. Subsidies will total a little more than $1 trillion over the next 10 years, instead of almost $1.2 trillion initially estimated.
MURRYSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Detectives believe a boy charged with stabbing 21 other students and a security guard at his Pittsburgh-area high school threatened two students by phone before the attack. That's according to a search warrant. It said there was a threat of violence that also contained an expletive. The two students threatened were not among those injured.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Public health officials say a mumps outbreak in central Ohio has grown to more than 200 confirmed cases. Officials say well over half of those cases are linked to Ohio State University. Health agencies say those infected range in age from 9 months to 70 years old. Mumps often starts with fever, fatigue and body aches. Those infected are urged to stay home.
